Gum Surgery

What Is Gum Surgery?

Gum surgery is when an incision is made into the gum. Different types of gum surgeries exist and they all accomplish different purposes. Most remedy the effects of gum disease but one, crown lengthening, can be cosmetic. Gum surgery can be as simple as restitching gums to reattach to teeth or as complicated as a gum graft. It depends on each case.

Three Common Gum Surgeries

A gum graft is when the oral surgeon takes material from the roof of your mouth and uses it to cover areas where gums are diseased. This protects teeth roots.

Crown lengthening is when the oral surgeon removes excess gum tissue to create more tooth surface for a crown or filling. It can also be used to reduce a “gummy” smile.

Receding gums are sometimes surgically reattached to teeth in homes they return to their original position.
