Understanding Orthodontic Options

Decades ago, orthodontics was equated to braces for children. Today, we at Lumora have several orthodontic options and help both children and adults get their dream smiles. Orthodontics, in broad terms, is straightening teeth. It also includes improving and realigning bite, improving bite force, and realigning the jaw among other typical issues. Orthodontic treatments not only give you a great smile but improve how you eat, how much you enjoy eatings, and speech. It can change your life in multiple ways.

Traditional Braces
Effective and Reliable

Traditional metal braces are an orthodontic staple. They work well for children and adults. They are best used for younger children and those with complex orthodontic issues. They are a highly affordable option.

Ceramic Braces
Subtle and Stylish

Ceramic or clear braces are effective like traditional braces but are less noticeable. The brackets are tooth coloured and the wires are frosted so they look more fashionable. The aren’t as durable as traditional braces.

Lingual Braces
Unseen Effectiveness

Lingual braces are attached to the back of the teeth so no one sees them as you move through your treatments. They are as effective as traditional braces. The downsides are they can be more uncomfortable for your tongue.

Invisalign
Barely Noticeable

Invisalign has been a popular clear aligner for years because of their effectiveness and that they are barely noticeable. They are also removable so you can eat and drink without concerns. They should be worn for 22 hours a day.

Getting Started With Treatment

The place to start when you are thinking about orthodontics is with your general dentist. They need to perform an oral health exam and do X-rays to see what may be needed for both your oral health and orthodontics. Dental issues should be addressed first before scheduling an orthodontist visit.

Your First Orthodontist Visit

An orthodontist is going to look at previous X-rays from your general dentists and probably will take some new ones to see if anything has changed. They will do a visual oral exam and talk to you about your lifestyle and goals before making a recommendation on the type of treatment that will be best.
