Root Canal

Root Canals Save Teeth

As much as some dread a root canal, it is a necessary procedure to save a tooth. The tooth is infected at its root and the diseased pulp is causing pain and likely swelling. The infection won’t go away by itself. It must be cleaned out and sealed so the tooth can remain intact. A crown will go over the tooth to protect it from decay.

Root Canals Are Routine for Specialists

Root planing is the second part of the deep cleaning procedure. The hygienist smooths out tooth roots below the gumline, being certain to remove bacteria from plaque and tartar buildup. Smoothing out the roots allows the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Recovering From a Root Canal

Your endodontist will give you aftercare instructions. You will want to eat soft foods for a while. Stay away from hot or spicy foods for a few days. You may want to have some over-the-counter pain relievers in case there is some pain. A cold compress may help also. It may take a couple of weeks to recover. You will need to go back for a checkup and to get your crown for your tooth.
